Converged Solutions Ltd wins major contract at Birmingham’s new city hospital

Converged Solutions Ltd, a channel partner for Hitachi Data Systems and SAN (storage area networks) specialist, has recently won a major contract to supply the wiring infrastructure for the new Birmingham hospital, the first of its kind for nearly 70 years.

The new £690 million hospital project is set to transform the city’s health facilities tenfold and CSL have been tasked to provide circa £1million of CAT 6 ADC/ Krone installations throughout the 170,000m² development.

CSLs team of 12 engineers and key personnel have been on-site since May 2007, which is set to be the largest construction project outside of London, with works anticipated for completion in September 2010. CSL has been assigned with providing the new hospital with a fibre backbone in excess of 50,000 metres, with over 60 wiring closet locations linked to the backbone. The project will also feature in excess of 700,000 metres of copper cable.

Mr Peter Twist, director of CSL, said: “The new Birmingham Hospital is a phenomenal project to be involved in and it took a lot of hard work to get to this point. The bidding process to obtain this degree of work took several months, but our dedicated team proved to be more than suitable for the job and were able to respond immediately.

“It is a great coup for a local company such as ourselves to undertake such a significant project within the local area. The appointment to the site is a real vote of confidence as it is a clear acknowledgment of our strength and capabilities to deliver a project of this magnitude. Additionally, the next threeyears will also enable us to create a strong portfolio of work and is set to benefit our staff in the future.”

In order to undertake the work involved in the project the CSL team completed IOSH training courses, to ensure the work carried out would meet the stringent health and safety measures dictated by the works contract.

The new Birmingham hospital, a joint venture between Consort Healthcare (Birmingham) Ltd, a joint-venture between Balfour Beatty, The Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC, is set to comprise a new 1,213 bed hospital on the 50 acre site of the old Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston, while a new psychiatric facility will provide 137 beds, as well as new 32 bed mental health unit at Showell Green Lane.

Operating throughout the UK, CSL has offices in Bromsgrove and Bristol and in their first year of trading enjoyed a turnover of £2.2 million, with 2007 on target to achieve in excess of £5.5 million, demonstrating an average sales increase of 42% per annum over the last two years.

A channel partner for Hitachi Data Systems, CSL is a privately owned convergence solutions specialist, providing network platforms to support data networks, IT, telecommunications, security and storage area networks (SAN).

CSL customers include: Birmingham New Hospital Joint Venture, Barclays, Egg, Dyson, Somerset Fire Service, West Midlands Police and Ambulance Services, Wincore Nixdorf, the Tussauds Group, Falmouth University, Homeserve Plc, University Hospital NHS Trust Birmingham and Balfour Kilpatrick.
