Midlands buildiing contractor Speller Metcalfe helps local school
Building contractor Speller Metcalfe, having completed a contract to design and build a major new extension at Pauntley School in Gloucester, formed a strong bond with the school’s pupils and management team, provided funding to employ local artist Jackie White to work with the school to design and make a stunning tree mural at the entrance to the new extended school building.
Andy Metcalfe of Speller Metcalfe stated: “The children took great interest in the works we were undertaking on site and working with us produced some excellent artwork and project diaries cataloguing the building work as it progressed.”
Together with Speller Metcalfe’s architect, the firm undertook regular question and answer sessions, held workshops discussing ideas for internal finishes, with the result being that the children picked all the colour ways for the final finishes used. Said Andy: “This contact was an absolute joy to work on, with the children so inquisitive, observant and interested in what was happening and why. Due to the fantastic rapport we established with the whole school we decided to make this donation to help them produce a lasting memory of the momentous change made to the school through the formation of their tree artwork.”
The £632,000 Gloucestershire County Council contract consisted of two new classrooms, administration and headteacher’s offices, staffroom and new toilet facilities and associated ground works. During the demolition, elements of the structure including an old arched doorway was saved and accentuated as a key feature. Through the project funding it was hoped that this feature could be augmented with a piece of artwork, but due to lack of funding the school was prevented taking the piece forward as part of the overall contract works, that was until Speller Metcalfe stepped in.
Pauntley School Deputy Head, Branwen Tyler, stated: “We are delighted with our new building and the children very much enjoyed working alongside Speller Metcalfe. Our wonderful tree mural will remind us of an exciting time in the history of Pauntley School.”
With offices in Gloucester, Malvern and London, and Speller Metcalfe Ecobuild which designs and builds sustainable buildings, Speller Metcalfe undertakes a range of building projects within the public, education, healthcare and commercial sectors.
