Music course stimulates composition for HTIS students

Pupils at Kidderminster’s Holy Trinity International School (HTIS) took part in this year’s Edexcel Exam Board’s daylong music course as part of the Gifted and Talented Programme for music students at HTIS.

In excess of 400 students were involved from across the country, with the day proving both challenging as well as rewarding for all concerned. HTIS Deputy Head, Mrs Vikki Vincent, commenting said: “The course covered how to deal with the many different types of exam questions, as well as involving the students in marking example compositions to help them to review and improve their own work when back in school. This type of educational activity is a valuable addition to the whole learning process.”

Senior students, as part of the school’s music lessons, have the opportunity of working with a specialist music software programme which enables them to write and then listen back and critique their composition.

Said Mrs Vincent: “They use the programme as part of their overall music tuition, even having the ability to write symphonies if they so wish. Already we have two completed compositions ready for submission to the GCSE board, which is a wonderful achievement as they prepare to undertake their GCSE Music exam this month, a full two-years early.”

Taking part as members of the school’s choir, they have competed recently in two competitions, Music for Youth with the final result as yet unknown, and the Dudley Music Festival, attaining a second in class.

Mrs Vincent added further: “They all have gained much and enjoyed a really positive day both on a musical and personal level.”
