National building contractor, Speller Metcalfe who won a £5million contract to build the Macmillan Renton Unit at Hereford County Hospital, will further support awareness for the charity by entering a team in a forthcoming major British cycling event.
Company Contracts Manager Matt Brown and colleague Andrei Crudgington have entered the ultimate Great British Cycling Challenge - covering the entire length of Britain - during May 2011. Macmillan Ambassador and Great Britain Olympic team cyclist Liam Killeen, who lives in Worcestershire, recently returned from intense training in the Canary Islands, and visited Speller Metcalfe’s Malvern offices to offer support for Matt and Andrej.
Starting in Land's End, they will set off on a 1,100 mile adventure, avoiding as many main roads as possible, with no support crews or assistance within 12 days. With a single planned rest day they intend to cycle 100 miles per day.
The purpose of the event is to raise money and awareness for Macmillan Cancer Support the charity that helps to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. Macmillan provides practical, medical and financial support and campaign for better cancer care.
Speller Metcalfe Business Development Manager James Speller said:”Speller Metcalfe are always extremely keen to offer support to charities and organisations that help vulnerable people including those who suffer from cancer. Our guys Matt and Andrej are undertaking a significant challenge to help raise awareness for Macmillan and we wish them all the best.”
The gruelling ride will commence along the North Cornish coast, passing the wilds of Dartmoor and crossing the River Seven into Hereford, then continue alongside the Welsh Marches borders and then up through the Peak District. As the riders progress further north they will pass through the magnificent Yorkshire Dales, over the border into the dramatic scenery of Scotland, along the West Coast and over to Arran, avoiding both Edinburgh and Glasgow before eventually arriving at the finish in John O'Groats.
Macmillan Area Fund Raising Manager Jon Rayner said: “It is great that Liam has leant his experience and support to Matt and Andrei. The lads are undertaking a phenomenally hard challenge to raise desperately needed funds to help Macmillan to support everyone affected by cancer who needs our help. We especially welcome the support being given by James’ firm Speller Metcalfe who are the main contractors for the £5 million Macmillan Renton Unit to be opened soon in Hereford”.
Speller Metcalfe continually seeks to support local and nationwide community organisations and charities, as part of an ongoing commitment to social aid and awareness, Macmillan Cancer Support being a significant beneficiary of this.
Speller Metcalfe have a Just Giving page open for any members of the public who wish to support Matt and Andrej on the ride in support of Macmillan Cancer Support: Any help will be warmly received: http://www.justgiving.com/james-speller0
