On Pole Pam F1 triumph for WBTSG

Hot off the plane from Monza, Italy, with signed F1 goodies, Grand Prix mad fan Pam has returned triumphant after her VIP trip behind the scenes of the F1 pits in support of the Worcestershire Brain Tumour Support Group (WBTSG).

Pole dancer Pam Waterlow from Droitwich, who danced her way back to health following the diagnosis of a benign Meningioma brain tumour in early 2008, has been raising money ever since for her local Worcestershire Brain Tumour Support Group, an organisation which offered help, friendship and who was there every step of the way throughout her treatment and recovery.

“Wow, what a fantastic time,” said Pam, “Honestly it brought tears to my eyes as I just couldn't believe what they allowed us to see. We got some fantastic pictures and we’ve never seen so many celebrities in the same place at the same time before, it was absolutely fantastic.”

Pam and her partner Steve took with them two flags, a Union Jack and a St. Georges flag, and also a polo shirt ready to collect valuable F1 autographs. Said Pam: “We managed to get signatures from various people on everything we took, and we’ve already received an offer of £100 for the signed polo shirt which is fantastic.

“We were presented with souvenirs from both the Renault and the Williams teams, which we are now hoping to auction off on eBay to raise funds for the group.”

Rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous, gaining prized autographs and a bag brimming with F1 goodies, for Pam it’s been a trip of a lifetime and one that she’ll never forget.

"Thanks so much to Renault and Williams, they were great. Steve and I can’t thank them enough for their hospitality and generosity. The whole experience was fantastic!"

Brain Tumour Statistics:

  • More children now die from a brain tumour than any other childhood cancer.
  • Sadly 3,400 people lose their lives to a brain tumour each year.
  • Whilst on average 75% of all childhood cancer patients in Britain survive five years, only 65% of children diagnosed with a high grade brain tumour live for longer than this.
  • In adults, with a malignant brain tumour, the statistic is even more tragic with only 14% living longer than 5 years.
  • 40% of all cancer deaths in children are from a brain tumour.
  • The number of people dying from a brain tumour has increased over the last decade - incidence increases by approximately 2% per year.
  • 6,500 people are diagnosed each year with a primary brain tumour.
  • On average it takes longer to diagnose a child with a brain tumour in the UK than in North America and a number of European countries. The principal cause of delay in diagnosis is the failure by front-line health professionals to include brain tumours in the differential diagnosis.
  • The average years of life lost (AYLL) to brain tumours is the highest of any cancer at over 20 years.
