National finals beckon for Mansell

Holy Trinity International School student, Gabriella Mansell (15yrs) has won the prestigious Midlands Independent Schools Athletics competition for the 100m at Leamington Spa and now progresses to the National Finals at Alexandra Stadium in Birmingham on the 22nd June.

Nineteen schools in total took part, travelling from all over of the region. Last year Gabriella after being spotted by HTIS sports staff was encouraged to join local club Stourport Athletics. A relative newcomer to competitive sport, she has excelled in a very short space of time.

HTIS Head, Mrs Pamela Leek-Wright, stated: “Gabriella’s personal achievement is phenomenal considering her comparative inexperience at competitive sports. We all wish her well for next month’s national competition.”

HTIS took a squad of twenty-four athletes to gain competition experience against a strong field, with the school’s year 8 girls competing well against competition that were in some cases nearly two years their senior. Peter Hurrell (11yrs)came away with a third in the discus and Jessica Murdoch (12yrs) a third in the 100m.
