Speller Metcalfe commence major works at Hereford Leisure Pool

National building contractor, Speller Metcalfe, have been awarded the contract to substantially renovate the facilities at Hereford’s Leisure Pool.

The project, valued at £1.6 million, and led by Contracts Manager Stuart Jones and Site Manager Phil Queenan, commenced mid April and is expected to last for approximately 16 weeks during which time the centre will remain operational, with the public using alternative changing facilities, and the pool potentially only being closed for 7 weeks.

Speller Metcalfe Joint Managing Director, Steve Speller said: “Speller Metcalfe are delighted to have been contracted to undertake further projects on behalf of Herefordshire County council. The Leisure Pool works will enable us to continue to illustrate ground breaking Design and Build projects with minimal interruptions to normal service.”

The general scope for the project works will include newly built features along with the replacement of many of the pools key structures. The existing boiler plant will be replaced by new energy efficient boilers, and replacement of the Air Handling Unit installation in the main pool area. The changing rooms will also be rebuilt and will be designed in a ‘village change’ style, a more modern, unisex type of configuration similar to the set up at Malvern Splash Centre.

Also included in the redevelopment will be the complete refurbishment of the popular spa area, together with various window replacements and roof repairs. The removal of asbestos in the boiler room ceiling will also be undertaken together with attention to minor external paving block and handrail works.

Once again engaged by Herefordshire County Council, Speller Metcalfe will work closely with Leisure Centre management company, Halo, to co-ordinate all works.

Bryan Williams, Design and Maintenance Manager of Herefordshire County Council commented: “It is great that the facilities can continue to be used whilst the works take place, with minimal disruption to the public and the facility will offer an improved experience for our customers in future.”

Hereford’s Leisure Pool contract is a further example of the type of Municipal project that Speller Metcalfe has the expertise to undertake on a regional and national scale.
