Culture On The Menu For Chinese New Year

Snack time has been a cultural taste sensation with noodles, prawn toast, spring rolls, wontons, prawn crackers and sweet and sour and hoisin sauce all adding to the experience for children celebrating Chinese New Year at Little Trinity Nursery in Kidderminster.

As this year is the year of the Dragon the children took part in lots of craft activities making lanterns, fans, dragon masks, animals, and created a giant collage dragon. They also colour sorted rice and pasta to make dragons using old buttons.

Nursery Manager, Gaynor Carter, said: “Enjoying special food is always a great way to introduce and engage the children, and to get them to try new tastes and flavours. Chinese New Year also provided a wonderful opportunity to discuss Chinese traditions and culture.”

The children used their Chinese-themed play tuff-tray and made playdough animals based on the twelve Chinese zodiac signs of the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig to help them learn about Chinese customs.

Added Gaynor: “By incorporating as many celebrations and world and cultural festivals as we can our children can build on their learning and understanding of the peoples of the world.

“Celebrating Chinese New Year and the year of the dragon has been wonderful and such a sensory experience with them learning about China, it’s traditions and its foods, as well as taking part in their very own Dragon Dance which they will remember for a long time!”
