Importance of World Book Day for Early Childhood Development

World Book Day, celebrated on the first Thursday in March, is enjoyed by children across the country as they dress up as their favourite storybook and fictional characters, and take part in a range of reading and learning activities.

This year children at Little Trinity Nursery in Kidderminster engaged in various themes with the Yellow Bumble Bees, children aged 2-3 years, focused on topics such as Tractor Ted, farming, animals, growing, cooking, and making carrot soup, whilst Red Ladybirds, children aged 3-4 years, engaged in activities related to Paddington Bear, such as creating paper plate bears, masks, and making marmalade for their marmalade sandwiches.

Nursery manager Gaynor Carter said: “Gosh it’s always lots of fun with dressing up and stories to read as we celebrate World Book Day which provides opportunity and excitement to explore books, storytelling, and physical learning through play.

“We’re passionate about encouraging them to engage in a range of themed activities that not only make learning fun but helps in their overall development.”

World Book Day is celebrated globally and is seen as an important calendar event that encourages, enriches and inspires young minds.

Added Gaynor: “Through themed reading and play, they learn about others, whilst discovering more about themselves and their friends.

World Book Day is a cornerstone in the journey for children to develop a love of reading and places focus on its importance as a crucial academic and life skill for learning.”
